the quorum

I gathered together an audience of bushes
tall shrubs really; green and red, some yellow
as I kept notes a yellow bug has crawled onto this notebook
the transcriptionist, no doubt
the shrubs surrounded me in a semi-circle
a focus group of skinny legged, bushy armed judges
the assembly of photosynthesizing subjects
each offering an opinion, supporting each other
then arguing in turn
as we analyzed all my decisions
a chorus of birds acted as a rowdy press pool
waiting to pull headlines and clickbait
from my various follies and shortcomings
“all I wanted to do was write,” I cried
“unmotivated!” they crowed back
“easily distracted by plants and animals!”
I knew it was true
the shrubs and birds, they were right.
