grain and glass

Have you ever watched someone perform a repetitive task
the mindless detachment and focus, simultaneous
like existing in two places at once
the here and the
yet-traveling-very-far-away
motionless at incredible speed
impermanent.

That’s what I thought saw
it wasn’t alive in any sense I know
but it was aware
it was watching me while it stepped between the trees and somewhere further away
a place I couldn’t see but I knew was hungry
it wasn’t hungry though, so it only stood at the threshold between us
imminent but never fully arriving
I could see that in all time and space I was smaller than I previously realized
not just a flea on the face of a planet;
an exhalation of air in the face of the cosmos
one grain of sand rolling through the decayed carbon of the eons
and this thing I saw for a brief moment
was like the lightning that strikes the sand
the spark that turns me from grain into glass.
